World Mental Health Day: Let's Make Mental Health & Well-being For All A Global Priority
October 10, 2022

Did you know that:
- Close to 1 billion people have a mental health disorder
-
1 in 8 people around the globe live with mental health conditions
- The COVID-19 pandemic caused a 25% increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide.
-
A leading cause of illness & disability is depression
-
1 person dies every 40 seconds from suicide
-
3 million people die every year due to the harmful & excessive use of alcohol
-
In some countries, people with mental health conditions are more likely to suffer severe human
rights violations, discrimination, and stigma

2022's World Mental Health Day comes at a very challenging time as we all emerge from the COVID-19
pandemic. No nations and most health systems were unprepared for the mental health crisis associated with
the pandemic.
In addition to the pandemic, the world is also struggling to cope with the effects of the war in Ukraine, significant displacement, climate emergency, a cost-of-living crisis, and skyrocketing levels of grief and loss, all of which have consequences for the well-being of world citizens. The global rates of individuals having suicidal thoughts are increasing. Also, people experiencing mental health conditions and their families are dealing with governments failing to prioritize mental health or living where services for mental, neurological, and substance use disorders have been significantly disrupted. Funding and investment in mental health programs on all levels are more critical than ever. For these reasons and more, the goal of the World Mental Health Day 2022 campaign is to make mental health & well-being for all a global priority! Undoubtedly, the need for mental health and psychosocial care and support will significantly increase in the months and years to come. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on people's mental health. Some groups have been particularly affected, including health and other frontline workers, students, people living alone, the elderly,
and those with pre-existing mental health conditions.
Let us honor all health and care professionals' daily
work, which often includes providing mental health care for others. We can all play our part in increasing awareness about what preventive mental health interventions work.

World Mental Health Day! Mental health care for all: let's make it a reality.
It's Oct 10th, World Mental Health Day!
Mental Health Care For All: Let's Make It A Reality

Close to 1 billion people have a mental health disorder
A leading cause of illness & disability is depression
1 person dies every 40 seconds from suicide
3 million people die every year due to harmful & excessive use of alcohol

2021's World Mental Health Day, comes at a very challenging time for us all when our day-to-day lives have been drastically altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been so many changes and so much instability. People, including those with mental health conditions, are experiencing even greater levels of social isolation than before the pandemic. And so many people are managing the grief of losing a loved one, often without being able to say goodbye or even hold proper funerals or memorial rituals.

No doubt the need for mental health and psychosocial care and support will continue to greatly increase in the months and years to come. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on people’s mental health. Some groups, including health and other frontline workers, students, people living alone, and those with pre-existing mental health conditions, have been particularly affected. Funding and investment in mental health programs on all levels is more critical than ever before. Let us honor the work that all health and care professionals do every day, which often includes providing mental health care for others. For this reason, the goal of the World Mental Health Day 2021 campaign is to make mental health care accessibility a reality for all!
