December 10, 2023 at 7:00 PM Local Time On the second Sunday in December, the Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting brings together family and friends from all around the world to light candles for an hour to remember the sons, daughters, siblings, sisters, and grandchildren who left this world too soon. On December 10, 2023 at 7:00 PM local time, thousands of people will light candles in remembrance of all the children who passed away too soon. The annual Worldwide Candle Lighting (WCL), a gift from The Compassionate Friends to the mourning community, is now regarded as the largest mass candle lighting on the planet. As it travels from time zone to time zone, it produces a virtual 24-hour wave of light. TCF's WCL began in the United States in 1997 as a modest internet observance and has since grown in popularity as word of the memorialization traveled throughout the world. Families come together in quiet commemoration of children who have died and will never be forgotten as thousands of informal candle lightings take place in homes as well as hundreds of formal candle lighting ceremonies.
